  Where it all began:

The Carji Club began in 2002 when three friends met at the Malvern Hotel and kicked off a Brownlow Medal tipping competition based on players from the teams they supported.

The following year, the group expanded the format to include players from all clubs, and each of the original three invited a friend. Attendance doubled from three to six, and a simple tradition was born.

Every year since, each new attendee has been able to invite a friend for the following year. With numbers capped and places highly valued, members tend to stay involved year after year. It’s this ongoing chain of connection and loyalty that has grown the Carji Club to 370 members.

The Club is proudly named after the inaugural Brownlow Medallist, Edward “Carji” Greeves.

      The Carji Lunch

What started as a lunch at the Malvern Hotel has grown into one of the biggest and most anticipated events on the Carji calendar. As attendance increased, the lunch moved to the Olympic Room at the MCG, where 342 members attended in 2025.

Every year, a Brownlow Medallist joins the Club as the guest speaker and nominates a charity for the Carji Club to support. Past speakers have included Peter Bedford, Gary Ablett Jnr, Chris Judd, Ian Stewart, John Platten, Kevin Murray, Peter Moore and others.

Through this tradition, the Carji Club has proudly donated $255,500 to charities including Reach, Debra Australia, Ladder, Fight for Bella, EJ Whitten, Captain Courageous, Compassion Australia and more.

The lunch brings members together for footy, friendship and a shared commitment to doing good.
